Semi-noob, want to start a Follow Along, uncertain of direction I should go

Some background

SEO:
I have nearly 2 years SEO experience starting in a company that owned many payday loan properties, saw the destruction that Penguin caused, I've since learned best practices and technical seo.

SEA:
I've done AdWords for a small business and have been through the Adwords course, so combined with seo I would say I have a good understanding of search.

'Programming' Languages:
Not sure if relevant, but I know HTML and CSS enough to get around, no wizardry; and am learning javascript.

Aff Marketing Related

(application pending with AdSimilis)

Traffic Sources:
So I guess the traffic sources I'm most familiar with are search (seo and adwords).
I'm trying Facebook ads right now, I'm at a loss so far and it seems like FB is very random with approvals, trafffic, and cpc these days from what I hear. I'm interested in display advertising and youtube.
Not really interested in lower quality sources like 7search and banners.

Markets/Niches:
no preference really

Wat do?
I lost my last job a while ago, I don't have much left of my nest egg but I have a little bit to invest. So I guess my question is where should I start? I know I should probably just choose one thing and stick to it it. I would like to keep updating to this thread to provide myself with some inspiration, any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

FB is tough because they limit accounts to 250.00 now.

POF is akin to sharing a small backyard pond with every vessel from Deadliest Catch.

Seems many here are in or headed to "Adult".

i imagine adult would include a lot of trickery: lockers, popunders, popovers, etc. ?

Search for and read the following alongs on the " AFTER DARK ADULTDATING FOLLOW-ALONG CONTEST"

Such as : thefalcon's Adult Dating Follow Along (Mobile)

They ran a contest a month back on setting up Adult campaigns and the various entrants provided a lot of detail on how and what's needed.

Only problem with adult is there is a ton of banner blindness and fast ad decay. You might be able to run an average campaign for 2-4 weeks before noticing it tips into the negative or break even range at which point you more or less have to start over with a fresh lander, angle or creatives.

Other than that it is killer.

All traffic sources have their downsides though.

Thanks Heading to adult too.

FB is wasted effort.

ya pof is an amazing traffic source, but there's no barrier to entry, so pretty much every affiliate and their brother are on there, and with the increasingly restrictive guidelines, pof has intentionally lowered ctr's across the board while maintaining cpm costs to maximize their profit while simultaneously maximizing user retention, increasing their overall bottom line and hurting yours. If the bids would calm down, it would be great, but there is always someone willing to raise their bids and run a little bit slimmer so you end up either with 10-25% roi on broad or 100-200% roi but with minimal scalability. I've spent over 300k on there and I like them very much but I have had to focus my efforts elsewhere as the writing is on the wall - they'd rather have affiliates running scammy advertorials than dating ads - just browse the current top placement ads, they claim they want to improve the user experience but I hardly consider tricking some stay at home mom into buying a biz opp or scammy weight loss product is "improving the user experience"

I would try out adult or mobile if you're looking for somewhere to run. With adult, go INTL, you'll be able to pull in $100 / day consistently within a few weeks to a month if you work at it (a lot higher is possible)

lol, everyone's telling me to get into porn

04-11-2013 04:35 AM #9 maynzie (Moderator)

Best way to go:

Adult, POF or Mobile.

Why these 3? Pretty fast results, low entry level and no whack around with 24/7 account bans.

I'm sure you're in a pretty scary position after losing your job, but what you need to know is that the same access to the people making millions is the same access you have Why not have a spy, see whats working then use your skills to pioneer an ever better campaign

Maynzie, you are a prophet of positivity! Every post I have read from you has been nothing but thoughtful, kind, and motivating. It's a good feeling to know guys like you are still around.

I too am thinking of jumping straight into Adult, been doing some research on the current angles being used, looking at all of the copycats, and came up with a few of my own angles. Just waiting to get approved by some of the aff networks I have applied to. :\

Aussies are a happy, positive, well adjusted bunch.

First of all, thanks for the encouraging words, Maynzie, you're the man!
Ok, so I think I'm gonna get into adult. I've read through some of the relevant threads. I feel like I'm spending too much time reading, I need to take action.
Let's do this!
So for traffic source I think I can get comfortable with mobile with my limited dev experience.

I'm not sure what traffic providers there are, I guess there are different ad networks for in-app and for mobile web.
Also, none of my current Affiliate Networks seem to have good Adult offers, what networks carry good offers for mobile adult?

04-11-2013 08:29 PM #13 sandyone (Member)

I am starting with Reporo, admoda for mobile

I read here about TrafficJunky and Exocliks.

How much do you have to invest?

04-11-2013 11:18 PM #15 mothpockets (Member)

~$1kUSD

04-11-2013 11:32 PM #16 zeno (Administrator)

If you've only got 1k for adult then consider something like ZeroPark where you can get a lot of data per dollar. You will at least be able to experiment with angles/landers/etc and learn what makes people click and convert. When first starting out one thing you should keep in mind is "how can I learn the most whilst losing the least".

You need Offers.

04-12-2013 11:57 AM #21 caurmen (Administrator)

Just a quick word of encouragement - it's still possible to make money on almost any traffic source! Some are a bit harder than others, but it's still doable.

FYI, I made my first positive ROI doing media buys! Not exactly the "approved" newbie route in.

Looking forward to seeing your follow-along, and if you need any help/advice with tech stuff, let me know!

04-12-2013 06:01 PM #22 mothpockets (Member)

Hi caurmen, I appreciate it.

I know someone locally who's been doing affmarketing for a few years (was an affiliate manager before) and is successful doing dating offers on FB.
From the forums, it seems adult and mobile are really big right now.

In a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' style I'm wondering which path I should take, for FB>dating turn to page 87, for mobile>adult turn to page 117.

also, I've talked to a few friends of mine who are domainers and none have heard of zeropark, not sure if it's a trusted source?

The owner is on here too, just browse through the forum or in the adult section he posted a follow along as well. The way he posts / interacts and some feedback I've heard by others, seems 100% legit and a great interface.

04-13-2013 06:45 PM #25 mothpockets (Member)

No suggestions on whether to go the FB>dating or mobile>adult route?

04-13-2013 07:16 PM #26 sandyone (Member)

You know how I feel.

The amount of time and energy you will spend begging FB to take non corporate money, can be better spent on traffic sources that cater to people rather than corporations.

Unless you are BofA or Wells Fargo, FB doesn't want you and will hunt you down.

04-13-2013 10:23 PM #27 mothpockets (Member)

Just going to lay out my thoughts on sources to brainstorm my route.

Search (web SEO, YouTube, Adwords)
the platform(s) I have the most experience with, though I don't have any AM-specific experience on these yet

Facebook
i have a fb ad account and have gotten AM ads approved using php cloaking/masking, but it seems everyone on here is doing FB dating offers, seems pretty saturated

Mobile
mobile adult seems like the freshest untapped market, but hugely competitive and risky, higher the risk higher the (potential) return though...

04-14-2013 03:25 PM #28 fjk87 (Veteran Member)

Why aren't you taking web adult as an option? You obviously have a web background doing SEO so this should be an easier entry step. Volume's there for sure, after that, tackle mobile adult / mobile in general ?

04-14-2013 05:17 PM #29 rooby (Member)

One traffic source, one offer.

04-15-2013 01:42 AM #30 bizfreak22 (Member)

If you have the patience to deal with FB's crazy rules and regs, I would highly recommend starting there. If you don't have much experience in IM, it's much easier to start making $$ on FB vs Mobile/Adult. Reason being is having to deal with less variables, and shorter sales funnel. There are affs that are making $$$ direct linking to dating apps, probably the easiest money I ever made in my life. Once you are comfortable with the platform, you can expand to using LP's and external offers. Testing is relatively cheap, and you don't have to wait weeks to start profiting. Just my two cents

Thanks for the comments man, I appreciate it a lot and its why I love to contribute. There is more then enough money for everyone in this industry and I for one can't handle all the work so what better way then to share with people tips If you'd like PM me and I will help you get started with a few offers that work, would be awesome to watch your success grow man

Aussies are a happy, positive, well adjusted bunch.
Haha, just some of us

Just a quick word of encouragement - it's still possible to make money on almost any traffic source! Some are a bit harder than others, but it's still doable.
THIS! It's been mentioned many times on the forum, sure there are favorable sources to begin with but it doesn't mean there isn't money to be made on EVERY source. Every single source out there you can make millions on, you just have to stick with it and learn the ropes. Don't expect to crush in one night, or one week, maybe even one month. AM is like anything else, you must earn and learn your ropes before you can fully take control of the wild sled But let me tell you, its beyond worth it. I believe that once someone has had a couple of profitable campaigns, they can always make profitable campaigns. Its like a switch that goes off in your head, and you literally just see money (maybe frequency alignment, I don't know).

Just believe in yourself, constantly remind yourself people are making BIG BUCKS, they have access to very similar things to you if not exact the same, they just have knowledge and mindset ahead of you which you can earn!

Get in the F****N trenches, Trust the process and begin to master your life
